SPOILERS!!!

Sarah soon learns that a body has been found on the river, and it is her friend Sammi, who she hasn’t seen for a couple of years. Sammi led quite irregular a life, and she came back when she was in need of something.

Upset and curious, Sarah talks to Alan, a police officer who she knows from town and actually wants to date her. Alan tells her all he knows, and he thinks that Sammi must have been drunk and fallen into the river. Not sure about this, Sarah walks the river and sees Jack on his boat. Sarah explains to him about Sammi and asks him if he saw or heard something unusual the night before. Jack is quite short with her and uncooperative. Jack is American and used to be a homicide detective in New York, but this is now in the past.

The following day Jack calls Sarah and wants to look into the case as he thinks that there is no way Sammi’s death was accidental. Someone put her near the weir in a way that she wouldn’t sink and disappear as it is what tends to happen. Besides, Jack has found some fresh car tracks near the river.

Sarah and Jack talk to Alan, but all he tells them is that Sammi was seen in the pub as she drank one too many. Alan refuses to believe that Sammi’s death was anything but accidental. Next Sarah and Jack go to see Sammi’s parents, but they are not very cooperative. Her father is particularly nasty as he considered his daughter a freeloader, and he doesn’t show any grief about her death.

Since the pub was the place where Sammi was last seen, this is their next stop. The bartender tells them that he saw Sammi with Robbo, her ex-boyfriend. They had a few drinks, and then they went out and seemed to be arguing about something. When Sarah and Jack talk to Robbo, the man tells them that Sammi came to find him as she wanted him to provide with some cocaine. They had a line each, and Robbo says that the reason why Sammi was in town was because she was involved with a rich married man who had a property in Cherringham. Now what Sarah and Jack need to find is who this man is.

This is a shortish story, so the pace of the story is quite fast. I have to say that the characters don’t have much depth but the reason is obvious.
