The foreword in this book tells us that the main character in the novel is based on the American students who went to England and Scotland to study medicine or anatomy. It seems that this was the origin of forensic medicine.
The novel is set in a fictional town in Maine. Maine is the northernmost state in the northeastern United States. Maine is the 12th smallest by area, the 9th least populous, and the 13th least densely populated of the 50 U.S. states. It is bordered by New Hampshire to the west, the Atlantic Ocean to the southeast, and the Canadian provinces of New Brunswick and Québec to the northeast and northwest, respectively.
