The novel is set in Brighton where Edgar lives and works as a detective inspector. Brighton is a seaside resort in the county of East Sussex. Brighton is located on the south coast of England, positioned 76 km south of London.

The first chapter in the book takes place in Hastings in 1912 when Stan Parks, a young boy, describes that he came onto the stage for a play he was rehearsing, and he saw Alice Dean hovering over fifteen-year-old Betsy Bunning. He was horrified because Betsy was lying and blood poured from the slash in her throat.
