A Half Forgotten Song 2 (Pages 65 – 171)

SPOILERS!!!

Mitzy agrees to talk to Zach when he brings him the heart of a bullock and needles, so that she can make a new charm. From her we discover that Mitzy was fourteen when she met Charles Aubrey and his family. She and his eldest daughter, Delphine, who was twelve at the time became close friends, but the younger daughter, Elodie, was hostile and contrary. Celeste was their mother, and Mitzy thought that she was the most beautiful woman she has ever seen. Celeste and Charles were not married, but that was the way they were. Charles thought that Mitzy was a free spirit and wanted to paint her. Old Mitzy tells Zach that she and Charles were in love when she was sixteen, and I have to say that if that is true, the relationship is totally wrong.

Zach meets Mitzy’s neighbour, Hannah, who is a young widow and very protective of Mitzy. She and Zach hook up, and we know that Zach is very taken by her. Hannah’s husband drowned five years ago when he was going after smugglers, and after that, an old friend of his, Irir, came to help Hannah. We know that Hannah keeps some secrets for Mitzy, something that the old woman keeps upstairs. I wonder what secret they share.

Zach also wants to know who Dennis is, a man who Charles Aubrey painted in his portraits, and when he asks Mitzy, she says she doesn’t know, but Zach is sure that she is lying.
