SPOILERS!!!
Mallory has a proper relationship for a while.. The man she starts dating is Scott, who was actually the person who sold her the car ten years ago. Mallory feels at ease with him and enjoys his company. However, she realises that she doesn’t love him. So when she suspects he is going to propose, she breaks up with him.
Now Jake works for the Cystic fibrosis association, and he is respected and appreciated there. He even starts giving talks about his experience when his sister died of the disease at thirteen. Meanwhile, Ursula is focused on her political career, and she has little time for Jake and Bess.
Something terrible happens. Mallory’s parents are run over by a tractor when they are trying to flag for help on the side of the road as their car has broken down. Senior and Kitty die. It is Ursula who reads the news in the newspaper and tells Jake. However, Jake tells her that they shouldn’t go. Ursula is a popular politician, and her presence there would create too much expectation, and he has to work in Atlanta anyway. The thing is that he and Cooper have fallen out. At his third wedding Cooper learnt that he and Jake supposedly went to Nantucket every year. Cooper didn’t deny it, but then he started thinking and guessed that Jake and Mallory had a thing going, so he was upset.
Despite her husband’s warnings, Ursula goes to Mallory’s parents’ funeral, and there she meets Leland. Leland is delighted to meet her as she now has a blog with hundreds of followers. Fifi left her for another woman because she wanted to have a child, and Leland didn’t. That night when Leland and Mallory are alone, Mallory is drunk, and she finally reveals her affair with Jake to Leland. What upsets Mallory is the thought that because of her ongoing affair she has been punished in this terrible way by losing her parents. Leland tells her that she shouldn’t think like that.
I am afraid that Mallory and Jake’s secret is not so secret any more. Apart from Leland, there are people who have an inkling that something is going on. JD, who Mallory used to date, saw them in the house when a candle that Mallory had for their dinner burned the table, and he and some firefighters came and found Jake and Mallory together. Cooper also knows there is something going on between Jake and his sister. And one weekend one acquaintance of Jake’s saw him on Nanturcket, but Jake pretended not to see her.
