Thomasina’s farm is outside Bristol. Bristol is a city and county in South West England with a population of 463,400. The wider district has the 10th-largest population in England.
The River Severn flows near the farm. The River Severn, at 354 km long, is the longest river in Great Britain. It is also the river with the most voluminous flow of water by far in all of England and Wales.
Thomasina takes Grayson to Chew Valley Lake where they spend some hours together. Chew Valley Lake is a large reservoir in the Chew Valley, Somerset, England, and the fifth-largest artificial lake in the United Kingdom.
Thomasina has always felt different to other people because of her disabilities, and she felt ugly because of her cleft palate and the dodgy job the surgeon did. Cleft lip and cleft palate, also known as orofacial cleft, is a group of conditions that includes cleft lip, cleft palate, and both together. A cleft lip contains an opening in the upper lip that may extend into the nose.
Thomasina’s brother goes to America and works on a ranch in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Jackson Hole is a valley between the Gros Ventre and Teton mountain ranges in the U.S. state of Wyoming, near the border with Idaho.
