Mephisto and Ruby are back in Brighton because they have a number together, the vanishing box.
The peace in Brighton is disturbed again when a young woman is found dead in her room in the guesthouse she lives in. The woman, Lily, worked in a flower shop,, and everybody says that she was nice and quiet, and she was friends with girls in the guesthouse: two who work in a bank and two others who are part of the bill of Mephisto, both being in the tableau vivant act. Everybody agrees that they saw her either Thursday night or Friday morning. Lily was found in a strange way: kneeling beside her bed, wearing a white linen nightgown, her eyes blindfolded and one of her arms tied to a towel rack as if pointing at something. Everybody is shocked because Lily was a quiet girl, and she didn’t even have a boyfriend. One thing is that she had started getting flowers from some secret admirer. Ed, Bob and Emma investigate this strange death, and they don’t know if the killer came from outside or if it was one of the people in the guesthouse.
