Pamela Beryl Harriman (March 20, 1920 – February 5, 1997), also known as Pamela Churchill Harriman, was an English-born American political activist for the Democratic Party, diplomat, and socialite. She married three times: her first husband was Randolph Churchill. Randolph proposed to her on the very evening they met, and they were married on 4 October 1939.

The book refers to the alleged affair of Winston Churchill and Doris Castlerosse. He painted four portraits of her, the same number of paintings he did of his own wife.
