The Riviera Set 7 (Pages 197 – 235)

Aly Khan fell for Rita Hayworth, and he did everything to impress her. In 1949 they got married when she was two months pregnant.

Two days before the wedding, they had a private screening of Rita’s latest film, “The Loves of Carmen”, produced by Rita’s own company, Beckworth Corporation. As co-producer, Hayworth hired her father, the dancer Eduardo Cansino, to help choreograph the traditional Spanish dances.

Rita had a daughter, Rebecca, from her marriage to Orson Welles.

Rita gave birth to another daughter, Yasmin.

Aly Khan broke a leg while skiing, and Rita nursed him. Yet he got bored and returned to the Riviera, where he returned to his life as a playboy. As a consequence, Rita divorced him. Hayworth filed for divorce from Khan on 2 September 1951, on the grounds of “extreme cruelty, entirely mental in nature.”

Pam Churchill, who had been Aly Khan’s lover, met Gianni Agnelli at the Riviera and had an affair with him. In 1948 Pamela moved to Paris and began a five-year-long romance with Gianni Agnelli, a noted playboy and heir to the Fiat empire, who was a year younger than she was.

Winston Churchill continued visiting the Riviera, staying with the Windsors and Beaversbrook. His health declined as he suffered some strokes. William Maxwell Aitken, 1st Baron Beaverbrook PC, ONB (25 May 1879 – 9 June 1964), generally known as Lord Beaverbrook, was a Canadian-British newspaper publisher and backstage politician who was an influential figure in British media and politics of the first half of the 20th century.

The Windsors enjoyed the friendship of Jessie Donaghue, whose father was the owner of Woolworth. Through her they got involved with her son, Jimmy Donaghue, who led a life of scandal and debauchery. James Paul Donahue Jr. (June 11, 1915 – December 6, 1966) was an heir to the Woolworth estate and a noted New York City socialite. A playboy by nature, he was a gay man at a time when homosexual acts were illegal. Though press agents arranged for him to be seen with female escorts, his pursuits, until he met Wallis, Duchess of Windsor, were exclusively homosexual. In 1950, he was 35 when befriended by the Duke of Windsor and the Duchess. He claimed he had had a four-year affair with Simpson.
