Hit and Run 2 (Pages 35 – 83)

SPOILERS!!!

The little girl, Ann-Marie, dies, and it broke my heart to read about it. I really didn’t expect that.

The identity of the woman found in the river is discovered when a pole dancer from a club calls. Rosa is the dead woman, and she worked in a pole dancing club. The owner of the club is Polish like the dead woman, but he is away. When Richard and Butchers go to the club and ask to talk to the manager, Butchers discovers that he is the owner of the car which ran over Ann-Marie. So here the two cases collide.

A witness claims to have seen two men getting in a blue Mercedes, one of whom was red-haired. Richard checks the records for any red-haired criminals, and there is one in the area: Lee Stone. The man shares the flat with Jeremy Gleason, who also has a criminal record. Butchers and Shap go to see them, but they claim not to know anything about the stolen car. And then Janine discovers that Stone is a bouncer in the pole dancing club, and when they ask Harper about it, he says that Stone could harass the girls, and he thinks that Stone tried his luck with Rosa but she turned him down. Then Janine brings Stone and Gleason for questioning. It is clear that they are lying, but they have to let them go.

The Chinleys are in pain, naturally, and Alex pushes Butchers to tell him who the police suspect. The next thing we know the man is in the area where Stone lives. Richard calls Janine to say that they have lost Stone and Gleason when they were following them, and he says that Alex Chinleys has been spotted in the place. The police find Gleason dead, shot in the head.

Janine urges her team to go after Stone, but he is not the only suspect. Janine goes to talk to Chris Chinley, and he admits to having been in the area, near the apartment, but then he left. He denies killing Gleason. When Janine leaves, there is a tense conversation between Debbie and Chris. They are both mourning, and Alex feels that his anger stops him from feeling so much pain. And he blames his wife for not holding Ann-Marie’s hand to cross the street.

The story is getting more and more interesting. I am curious to know who killed Rosa and why.
