Rich Girl, Poor Girl 6 (Pages 292 – 365)

SPOILERS!!!

The three friends continue having conflicts and new experiences. Nic gets to meet Mat at a party, and there is an instant attraction. Mat asks her for her number, which she writes behind his card. When Simon sees them together, he feels jealous because Nic is the woman he wanted but couldn’t have because he knew who her father is. Then when they return home, Simon removes the card from Mat’s jacket pocket, and the next day he looks everywhere but is unable to find it. I think Simon is mean and selfish; he can’t have Nic and decides that his brother can’t have her either. How stupid is that? Doesn’t he know that Nic may be in a relationship with someone else? Couldn’t it be better if the person Nic has a relationship with is his brother, a person he supposedly loves?

Simon gets to meet Caryn some time later. Her boss is preparing a project about diamonds in Africa, and he puts her in contact with Simon, who gives his name as Charlie, because he knows a great deal about the topic. Simon thinks that her face is familiar, but he can’t place her. Then when Caryn mentions Nic, he realises that he saw her with Nic at the party where Nic met Mat. At some point Simon leaves in a hurry after she mentions Nic, but when she is close to home, he calls her, apologising and asking her to see her in her place. Caryn accepts, and they spend the night together. I wonder where this will go, especially as Simon is someone with so many secrets.

Tory has started living in her own place, and one day she bumps into Rob, who used to be Susie’s boyfriend. From that moment she can’t stop thinking about him, and when her parents invite him to dinner, he acts as if she didn’t exist because he is upset knowing about Luc. Then when she drives him home, she is very angry and leaves him at his place without stopping. Then after parking her car, he is there, and that night they start something that becomes a full-blown affair. What I don’t understand is why she doesn’t break up with Luc when she clearly prefers to be with Rob.

Apart from the three friends, Estelle has discovered that Jim Harte is her father. Her mother worked for him in Zimbabwe and he got her pregnant. Estelle decides to go and talk to him, but his reception couldn’t have been worse, and he kicks her out of his office unceremoniously. Besides, he knows that she is a prostitute because she was offered to him by one of his clients. From his memories we discover that Gloria, Estelle’s mother, kept living in the house after Estelle was born, but then Sarah, Jim’s wife, discovered the deceit. There was a terrible situation when Sarah ran up the stairs, fleeing from him, and then Jim tried to grab her and as a consequence, she fell down the stairs and died. Now Estelle reminds him of that time.

After Estelle leaves the office, crying and shaking, and when the following day she starts thinking that she wants to take revenge for the way she has been treated. Jim mentioned two daughters, and Estelle uses the detective to look into the life of Nic, and she discovers where she works and even who she is friends with. So one day she waits for her, and pretending to be lost, she makes contact with Nic. I wonder what Estella has in store for Nic.

I have to say that I am finding the book too long and it is dragging a bit.
