New Book – House of Correction by Nicci French (Pages 1 – 53)

First Published: 2020

The book starts in a prison as a woman spends her first night in a cell.

The woman’s name is Tabitha, and we discover that she is a remanded prisoner for murder. When she talks to her solicitor, we learn about the facts. Tabitha moved to a small village a few months ago and was having the house refurbished. a local man, Andy Kane helped her with the repairs, and on December 21 Tabitha asked Andy to take some planks from her shed, and it is there where the body of Stuart Rees was found. Blood was found on her, but Tabitha says that there was blood on her because of touching the body. The weird thing is that Tabitha doesn’t remember much about that day before finding the body. Stuart Rees was Tabitha’s neighbour and he had been her teacher when she was younger.

When she gets a visit from a psychiatrist, she admits that she has had mental problems in the past. She was depressed and stayed in a clinic.

Tabitha thinks that she will soon be out of jail because it doesn’t make sense to be accused of this murder. She had no reason to kill her neighbour.

I think we still don’t have all the facts and there must be some evidence which got Tabitha accused of murder. So far what she has mentioned is simply circumstantial, but I imagine there is more than the fact that the body was found in Tabitha’s property.
