Crossed Skis 4 (Pages 87 – 116)

SPOILERS!!!

In Austria Robert O’Hara tells Kate that he changed 10 pounds into Austrian money, and now it is gone from his room. Robert does not want to tell the police or the hotel manager because that would create discomfort. Then without giving any names, Kate tells Frank Harris, and like Kate he thinks that their party should know. So at dinner Frank tells everybody that he has been informed that a thief is at large and they should be careful with their money or other possessions. The logical thing to do is place the money in envelopes and deposit it in the hotel safe.

Robert then approaches Frank and tells him about his missing pounds, so they agree to meet later. When Frank arrives at the chalet where Robert is staying, O’Hara is nowhere to be seen, so he lets himself in and has a look through the things in his suitcase. When Robert arrives, Frank insists that they go together through the things in his suitcase just to make sure the money is gone. Robert is not happy but he eventually acquiesces. To his surprise, a book that another man from the party lent him hides ten pounds in its pages, but it is not Robert’s money as his was in shillings. Frank asks the other two men, but they say that the money is not theirs, but they know that someone else – I think it is Neville or Malcolm – discovered that some pounds were missing, but it was less than ten pounds. Robert is upset because finding this money makes him look shady.
