New Book – Murder in Mesopotamia – Hercule Poirot 14 – by Agatha Christie (Pages 1 – 25)

First Published: 1936

The book starts with an introduction of Dr Reilly, who explains that what follows is the narration of Miss Amy Leatheran, about some events that happened in Iraq four years ago.

She was present with these events happened, and even though at first she refused to put these to paper, she finally agreed.

Amy Leatheran is a nurse who found herself in Iraq after being employed by Mrs Kelsey to look after her newborn. When the woman was to return to England, Dr Reilly asked Amy if she would interested in working for Mr Leidner and his wife. Mr Leidner wanted a nurse for his wife, who in his own words suffered from some fancies. Mr Leidner is an architect in a dig, and before Amy goes to the place, she learns from Mr Kelsey and later from Sheila Reilly that the group of people there seem to be in some kind of conflict. There is nothing evident but both of them claim that they could notice some kind of underlying friciton. Amy is eager to meet Mrs Louise Leidner, who everybody describes as charming and manipulative, but nobody knows what the problem with her is or why her husband thinks she needs a nurse.

I read this book years ago, but I don’t remember much. If I have to guess, I imagine that the victim might be Mrs Leidner.
