A Girl Called Justice 4 (Pages 70 – 103)

SPOILERS!!!

Justice discovers that the person who left her the message in the book and asked her to meet her in the turret is Dorothy, a young servant. Justice goes to see her in her room, and Dorothy says that there is a murderer in the school. Dorothy claims that Miss Thomas killed Mary, and she tells Justice that Mary got sick but she was getting better. Then one night she saw Miss Thomas leave the room, and Mary got worse and was taken to the sickbay. Then she died, and Dorothy thinks that Miss Thomas had something to do with her death, especially as Dorothy found a glass of water with the remains of some type of powder.

That night it snows heavily, and the following morning they are surrounded by metres of snow. The teachers divide the girls into groups to shovel the snow and clear the roads. Justice and her friends of dormitory work together, and Hutchins, the caretaker, tells them to clear the path to the gym. Then they discover the old swimming pool, and Justice finds Miss Thomas’s body on the bottom of the empty pool.

Justice is convinced that Miss Thomas was murdered, but Miss De Vere keeps saying that it was a tragic accident. Justice is intent in investigating. The phone lines are down because of the snow, and they can’t leave the school. So all Justice can do is write a letter to her father, hoping that the post will be collected in a few days.

Justice and Stella are caught red-handed when they are in Miss De Vere’s office. Justice finds a note in a book, which incidentally was written by her father, and in the note someone says that they know her secret, and it seems that she is being blackmailed. Miss De Vere catches the two girls, and tells them that she will consider whether to expel them in the next few days. Stella is really upset, but Justice is not too bothered.

That day she overhears the head girl, Helena, telling a friend that she is meeting someone at midnight. The day Justice went to see Dorothy in her room in the attic, she saw Helena outside the room and heading for the north tower. After overhearing Helena, she decides to find out what Helena is up to. So that night she wakes up and goes to the attic and calls on Dorothy. Justice tells Dorothy about Helena, and when they check the place, they find her lying on the floor. Justice and Dorothy think that she is dead, and Justice hurries to call Miss De Vere, who she finds in the corridor. Miss De Vere tells her to stay with Dorothy, and later the teacher tells her that Helena has been taken to the sickbay. The following day Miss De Vere says that Helena is sick, but there is nothing to worry about.

What is happening here? Is Justice right and there is a murderer? But who would want to kill Mary, a harmless servant? And what about Miss Thomas? Was she murdered, and did she die in an unfortunate accident? And what happened to Helena? Did someone attack her? And who is the man who she told her friend she was going to meet? Mr Pierre, the French teacher?
