After their return to England, things are not easy as Archie doesn’t have a job, and as time goes by and he is unable to find work, he grows more melancholic and bitter. Yet, he eventually finds a job, which brings some money home.
Agatha’s work as a writer bears fruit, and she realises that this can be a profession rather than the hobby she always regarded. Their next books are The Man in the Brown Suit and The Secret of Chimneys.
Agatha decides to hire an agent, Edmund Cork, who will stay with her for the rest of her writing career. Thanks to him, she manages to leave the previous publishing house, and gets a three-book contract with Collins.
