Barefoot – Facts


Like Elin Hilderbrand’s other books, this novel takes place in Nantucket. Nantucket  is an island about 30 miles (50 km) by ferry south from Cape Cod, in the American state of Massachusetts.

One of the problems that Brenda has is the criminal charges she might have to face for vandalising a painting by Jackson Pollock. Paul Jackson Pollock (January 28, 1912 – August 11, 1956), known professionally as Jackson Pollock, was an American painter and a major figure in the abstract expressionist movement. He was well known for his unique style of drip painting.

Vicki and Melanie have their homes in Darien, Connecticut. Darien  is a town in Fairfield County, Connecticut. Located on Connecticut’s “Gold Coast,” the population was 20,732 at the 2010 census.Darien is one of the wealthiest communities in the U.S.

On Nantucket Vicki, Brenda, and Melanie stay in a cottage in Sconset.  Siasconset is  at the eastern end of Nantucket island, Massachusetts with a population of 205 at the 2010 census. The various spellings of its name, Sconset, Sconset, Seconset, Siasconsett.

One of the landmarks mentioned in the book is Sankaty Light where one night Vicky walks. The Sankaty Head Light is a lighthouse located on Nantucket island. It was built in 1850, was automated in 1965, and is still in operation. It is located at the easternmost point of the island, in the village of Siasconset.

Sconset Chaptel is  in whose square Melanie and Josh first get together and become lovers.

Monomoy Beach is where Melanie and Josh often went to be together.

Josh’s mother committed suicide when he was only twelve. In the book his father and he talk about the suicide for the first time, and Tom tells his son that some people said that the reason why his wife killed herself was due to seasonal mood disorder. Seasonal affective disorder (SAD), also called winter depression, winter blues, summer depression, and seasonal depression, is a mood disorder subset in which people who have normal mental health throughout most of the year exhibit depressive symptoms at the same time each year, most commonly in the winter.
