Part of the book takes place in France. The characters are in France twice. The first time is when Kate and Davis go there on their honeymoon. The place they go is La Rochelle. La Rochelle is a city in southwestern France and a seaport on the Bay of Biscay, a part of the Atlantic Ocean.
The town where Davis has his house is Saint Martin de Rè. Saint-Martin-de-Ré is a commune in the Charente-Maritime department in southwestern France. It is one of the 10 communes located on the Île de Ré.
The conversation between Kate and Davis takes place in the Phare des Baleines, a photo of which he had in the flat.
