This novella takes place in 1880 just after Nate and Annie’s wedding. They visit his parents in San Jose, California. San Jose is the third-largest city by population in California, the tenth-largest by population in the United States, and the county seat of Santa Clara County.
While in San Jose, Annie and Nate ride to Mount Hamilton. Mount Hamilton is a mountain in California‘s Diablo Range, in Santa Clara County, California. Mount Hamilton, at 1,300 m, is a mountain overlooking Santa Clara Valley.
When they go out to have dinner with Nate’s friend, Tom Campion, the district Attorney, his wife mentions Clara Folz, the first woman lawayer. Clara Shortridge Foltz (July 16, 1849 – September 2, 1934) was the first female lawyer on the West Coast, and pioneered the idea of the public defender. Annie and Tom’s wife mention that Clara lived in San Jose.
Violet mentions Amelia Bloomer as a woman she wouldn’t like to be. Amelia Jenks Bloomer (May 27, 1818 – December 30, 1894) was an American women’s rights and temperance advocate. In her publication, Bloomer promoted a change in dress standards for women that would be less restrictive in regular activities.
