The action takes place in a small fictitious town called Nota Lake. Kinsey mentions the Mammoth Lakes, which are a real place. Mammoth Lakes is a town in Mono County, California.
One of the fixed elements in Kinsey’s life is her Smith-Corona typewriter, which in this book gets busted when she is attacked.
When she visits Ritter’s daughter, the woman collects dolls, especially Barbies and Chatty Cathy’s. Chatty Cathy was a pull-string “talking” doll manufactured by the Mattel toy company from 1959 to 1965. The doll was first released in stores and appeared in television commercials beginning in 1960. Chatty Cathy was on the market for six years and was the second most popular doll of the 1960s after Barbie.
In this visit we also learn that Barbie doll was first released in 1959. Barbie is a fashion doll manufactured by the American toy-company Mattel, Inc. and launched in March 1959. American businesswoman Ruth Handler is credited with the creation of the doll using a German doll called Bild Lilli as her inspiration.
