Janie works as a hairdresser in Buckingham. Buckingham is a town in north Buckinghamshire, close to the borders of Northamptonshire and Oxfordshire.

Since her profession is in hairdressing, she mentions the usual work she has. For example, highlights. Hair highlighting/lowlighting is changing a person’s hair color, using lightener or haircolour to colour hair strands. There are four basic types of highlights: foil highlights, hair painting, frosting, and chunking. Highlights can be done in natural or unnatural colours.

A permanent wave, commonly called a perm or “permanent”, involves the use of heat and/or chemicals to break and reform the cross-linking bonds of the hair structure. The hair is washed and wrapped on a form and waving lotion or ‘reagent’ is applied.  The hair swells, stretches and softens, then moulds around the shape of the form.

An updo is a hair style that involves arranging the hair instead of allowing it to fall freely. It can be as simple as a ponytail, but is more commonly associated with more elaborate styles intended for special occasions such as a prom or wedding.

Chignons are generally achieved by pinning the hair into a knot at the nape of the neck or at the back of the head, but there are many different variations of the style.

When Janie goes on holiday and meets Dominic, her destination is Maasai Mara. The Maasai Mara National Reserve (also known as Masai Mara and by the locals as The Mara) is a large game reserve in Narok County, Kenya; contiguous with the Serengeti National Park in Mara Region, Tanzania.

Dominic is a Masai warrior. The Maasai  are a Nilotic ethnic group inhabiting southern Kenya and northern Tanzania. They are among the best known local populations due to their residence near the many game parks of the African Great Lakes, and their distinctive customs and dress. Traditional Maasai lifestyle centres around their cattle which constitute their primary source of food. The measure of a man’s wealth is in terms of cattle and children.
