The night they find the body on the beach, Miles and Alex drink absinthe. Absinthe is historically described as a distilled, highly alcoholic (45–74%) beverage. Absinthe has often been portrayed as a dangerously addictive psychoactive drug and hallucinogen. By 1915, absinthe had been banned in the United States and in much of Europe, including France, the Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland and Austria-Hungary. Although absinthe was vilified, it has not been demonstrated to be any more dangerous than ordinary spirits. Recent studies have shown that absinthe’s psychoactive properties (have been exaggerated. A revival of absinthe began in the 1990s, following the adoption of modern European Union food and beverage laws that removed longstanding barriers to its production and sale. By the early 21st century, nearly 200 brands of absinthe were being produced in a dozen countries, most notably in France, Switzerland, Australia, Spain, and the Czech Republic.
Miles goes to Oriel College in Oxford, but he drops out when he gets into trouble after the creation of his club. Located in Oriel Square, the college has the distinction of being the oldest royal foundation in Oxford. In recognition of this royal connection, the college has also been known as King’s College and King’s Hall. The main site of the College incorporates four medieval halls: Bedel Hall, St Mary Hall, St Martin Hall and Tackley’s Inn, the last being the earliest property acquired by the college and the oldest standing medieval hall in Oxford.
After the business on the island, Grace decides to take a gap year. She ends up in Port Douglas, Australia, where she will meet Gabriel, the man who she later marries. Port Douglas is a town in Far North Queensland, approximately 70 km north of Cairns. Its permanent population was 3,205 at the time of the 2011 census. The town’s population can often double, however, with the influx of tourists during the peak tourism season May–September.
Grace and Gabriel return to Colombia to fight the drug cartels dominating the region where he is from. A drug cartel is any criminal organization with the intention of supplying drug trafficking operations. They range from loosely managed agreements among various drug traffickers to formalized commercial enterprises. The term was applied when the largest trafficking organizations reached an agreement to coordinate the production and distribution of cocaine.
Miles meets Chrissy, who he later marries, in Patong, Thailand. Patong refers to the beach and town on Phuket‘s west coast. It is the main tourist resort on the island of Phuket, and is the center of Phuket’s nightlife and shopping. The beach became popular with Western tourists, especially Europeans, in the late 1980s. Numerous hotels are located there and the area has expanded into a tourist Mecca.
