This new book by Marina Fiorato is based on the characters of the Shakespearean comedy “Much Ado about Nothing”.
In the play Beatrice and Benedick are continously at each other’s throats, but in the end they fall in love. This book takes place some years before. Beatrice is in her uncle Leonato’s care, acting as a companion to her cousin Hero. Beatrice is feisty and curious about sex. She is often berated by her aunt because she takes to telling love stories to her younger cousin, which her aunt deems unsuitable.
Leonato invites some men to his palace, among whom there is Benedick. Benedick is travelling with Claudio as some kind of companion. As soon as Benedick meets Beatrice, he feels attracted to her. However, when they speak, Beatrice does not shy away and shows her firey personality. In fact, Benedick feels she has won over him when he tried to impress her, but that has not happened. Quite the opposite.
When Benedick takes Claudio to his uncle, the archbishop, he sees Don Pedro, the prince of Aragon, in town, and after they talk, he ends up hiring Benedick as a spy for him. Apparently, something is going to happen, maybe a war, or something. Who knows?
