This novel is set in the north of England.

Lucy comes from Newcastle where she lives with her family. There are references to the river Tyne. Newcastle upon Tyne is a city in Tyne and Wear, North East England, 166 km south of Edinburgh and 446 km north of London on the northern bank of the River Tyne, 13.7 km from the North Sea. Newcastle is the most populous city in the North East.

Lucy studies law at Durham University, and when her family disown her, she stays in the city. There are references to the cathedral, and the river Wear. Durham is a historic city and the county town of County Durham in North East England. The city sits on the River Wear, to the south of Newcastle upon Tyne and to the north of Darlington. Durham is well known for its Norman cathedral and 11th century castle, both designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1986. The castle has been the home of Durham University since 1832.
