Even though I have been to Sweden once, I don’t know much about Swedish geography or cultural aspects.

The plot of this novel takes place in Sweden. The crime in this book happens in  Fjällbacka, which is a small town and popular summer destination in the country.

Patrik, the police officer investigating the case comes from Tanumshede, which is another town near Fjällbacka.

Erica and Patrik also go to Göteborg where Alex lived with her husband. Göteborg is the second largest city in Sweden.

Apart from geography, we learn about different women authors whose biographies Erica wrote: Anna Maria Lenngren, Karin Boye, and Selma Lagerlof. The book doesn’t tell us a lot about them, but thanks to the references, I’ve done a little research about them.

Anna Maria Lenngren (née Malmstedt; June 18, 1754 – March 8, 1817) was a Swedish writer, poet, translator and salonist. She is one of the best-known Swedish woman poets.

Selma Ottilia Lovisa Lagerlöf (20 November 1858 – 16 March 1940) was a Swedish author. She was the first female writer to win the Nobel Prize in Literature, and most widely known for her children’s book Nils Holgerssons underbara resa genom Sverige (The Wonderful Adventures of Nils).

Karin Maria Boye (26 October 1900 – 24 April 1941) was a Swedish poet and novelist.

And finally Fröding is a Swedish poet, and Dan’s love for his poetry made Camilla realize he was Alex’s lover. Gustaf Fröding (22 August 1860 – 8 February 1911) was a Swedish poet and writer.
