This new book starts with a prologue in which a woman talks about her grandmother being a seal person and then her own mother going to the sea too.
Then the story starts in 1992. Ruth and her husband Michael are repairing the sea house, a old vicarage house or manse on an island in Scotland. While changing the floor in the study, Michael discovers a wooden box inside of which there are the remains of a baby with a malformation, the leg bones are welded into one. The police come to retrieve the bones, and Ruth starts wondering about the baby whose bones they have discovered. This woman is an orphan after her mother drowned herself.
The beginning of the book is intriguing. There’s also a mention of a presence Ruth feels in the house. I don’t know if the book is about ghost or just a mystery.
